A violin and bow on indigo velvet

A first path for the violin. The early lessons are about the hold and the bow, because a tune on a collapsed wrist teaches the wrong shape. You name the open strings, draw one bow stroke that stays on one string, then add the first finger. A scale fragment comes only after that note is in tune with the open string next to it.

First lessons. A teacher checks the hold on camera.

Instrument film · 0:12A short demo film for this instrument. It is not a teacher on camera. Each lesson below has its own film.

You will learn

  • Hold the violin without gripping the neck
  • Name the four open strings
  • Draw one quiet bow stroke on one string
  • Place the first finger in tune
  • Play a slow fragment on one string

At home

  • A violin and a bow
  • Rosin
  • A shoulder rest if you already use one
  • A phone or laptop for Zoom, set so the teacher can see the bow and the left hand
