Instrument path

Tabla

Demo preview. The lesson paths, fees, and saved progress on this site are not the school's final offer.

A pair of tabla on saffron cloth

A first path for tabla. You learn how the two drums sit, how a bass stroke sounds different from a treble stroke, and how to say the bol before you play it. The path uses a slow pulse, not a fast composition. The teacher listens for a clear stroke more than for speed.

First lessons. Spoken bols, then the hand.

Instrument film · 0:12A short demo film for this instrument. It is not a teacher on camera. Each lesson below has its own film.

You will learn

  • Tell the bass drum from the treble drum
  • Play one bass stroke and one treble stroke
  • Say the bol, then play it
  • Keep a slow alternating pulse
  • Speak a short phrase and play it at the same speed

At home

  • A tabla pair
  • A thin cushion or ring if you use one
  • A phone or a laptop for Zoom, set so the teacher can see both hands
